FAQs

How can I join the team?

By filling out the application form! We will be sending it out right after Rocketry 101 on September 6th 2023. The deadline is September 17th 2023 at 5:00pm. We will not accept any late applications.

Are there any requirements for joining the team?

No, you just need to fill out the application form! We accept all kinds of McGill students, regardless of year (both undergraduate and graduate), faculty, or program. You do not need to have any prior knowledge or experience with rocketry. There is a mandatory $40 membership fee that we all pay every year.

What is your selection process for applicants?

We base our decisions off of the answers you submit on the application form, so make sure that you make an effort filling it out!

What is the acceptance rate onto the team?

We don’t know yet! This year is actually the third year we are having a stricter application process by selecting applicants. We made this decision because we reached a team size of ~200 members, which was becoming difficult to manage. By putting a cap on the number of team members, there will be more relevant work for each member.

Do you recruit in the winter semester?

No. We work on a very strict timeline, and we unfortunately do not have time to give members proper training in the Winter semester. As such, Fall semester is your only chance for joining the team for the 2023-2024 school year.

What is the time commitment?

It will depend on the project you’re in. In general, if you want to make a meaningful contribution to the team, you should expect to spend at least 5 hours per week for team-related work (including meetings) as a general member. The more you put in, the more you learn, and at some point it’ll become so fun that you’ll stop counting hours! For this reason, as leads, it is difficult for many of us to assess how many hours we spend on the team.

Can I join more than one design team?

Yes, but consider the answer to the previous question. It also depends on how involved you want to be on each team and how much you are willing to sacrifice to achieve that. For example, if you want to commit and stick to 6+ hours per week for both teams on top of your course load, you will have to give up something else, be it social time, sleep, study time, relaxation, etc.; there are only 24 hours in a day.

What communication platform do you use?

We use Slack! We will be inviting you to our Slack platform once you are accepted onto the team.

What is Rocketry 101?

It’s our crash course on rocketry basics, and gives an overview of the work the MRT does! It’s the most important training of the year and is a very prominent part of our recruitment process, so make sure not to miss it.
